The ASD Unit was opened by Ms Mary Coughlan, Tanaiste and Minister for Education and Skills on Friday the 12th of November 2010. It was a proud day for the school and local community and the result of a great deal of hard work by the Chairperson, Rev. Stephen O’Mahony, the Board of Management and many committed stakeholders. The Unit has provided a safe and welcoming space for many young people over the years. The teaching staff and SNAs work diligently and competently each day to enable all the students enrolled in the Unit to access the curriculum and derive the maximum benefit from their time in Scoil Muire agus Padraig. Extensive discussions take place with each student and family to ensure that curriculum can meet individual needs. All subjects are offered to each young person and the partnership approach is designed to foster independence. The Department of Education has approved the construction of a new building for the ASD Unit which will be an outstanding addition to the school.
