DEIS

DEIS is the action plan by which the Department of Education Deliver Equality of Opportunity to Schools (DEIS).

What is DEIS?

Delivering Equality of opportunity In Schools is a national programme launched by the Department of Education and skills in 2005 and reviewed in 2016 which aimed at addressing the educational needs of children and young people from disadvantaged communities. The DEIS Plan 2022, sets out a vision for future intervention in the critical area of social inclusion in education policy, and is the DES policy instrument to address educational disadvantage

The frame of reference for DEIS is based on the definition of Educational disadvantage in the Education Act (1998) and is defined as: “…the impediments to education arising from social or economic disadvantage which prevent students from deriving appropriate benefit from education in schools.” The action plan is grounded in the belief that:

  • every child and young person deserves an equal chance to access, participate in and benefit from education
  • each person should have the opportunity to reach her/his full educational potential for personal, social and economic reasons and
  • education is a critical factor in promoting social inclusion and economic development. (DEIS: An Action Plan for Educational Inclusion (2005) p.7)

Scoil Muire agus Pádraig is one of 185 second level schools are included in the programme. Examples of some of the supports that our school receives are:

  • Access to Home School Community Liaison Services
  • Access to School Meals Programme (dinners at reduced costs)
  • Access to a range of supports under the School Completion Programme
  • A reduced pupil:teacher ratio compared to other schools

Scoil Muire agus Pádraig is will be starting the 2025-2028 plan in September. The School’s DEIS plan consists of eight areas of priority where targets are set and are monitored regularly:

  • Retention
  • Attendance
  • Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • Examination attainment
  • Educational transitions
  • Partnership with parents
  • Partnership with others—schools, community, external agencies
